In the middle of the night, Lyra woke to brightness. A shaft of moonlight was filtering in through the window. She squinted and saw that the moon was peeking out from behind thick, heavy clouds. Snow drizzled down, the shadows of snowflakes drifting across her room.

To her left, she felt movement and she looked over and froze. Garrick slept, his breath slow and measured. He’d kicked off the sheets, his hand resting on his stomach.

His mask was off.

It must have fallen off sometime during the night. It was laying on the sheets between them.

Every ounce of sleepiness and lethargy disappeared as she looked down at his face for the very first time.

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she saw three deep scars that ran from the top of his forehead down to the middle of his cheek. Half of his right brow was gone, shot through with silvery scar tissue and the skin around each claw mark was stretched tight yet slightly bubbled.

He’d been just a boy when he’d been attacked and it was painfully obvious how much the scars must’ve irritated him as he’d grown into a man. They probably still pained him even now.

And Garrick was lucky that he still had his right eye. She saw a little nick on his eyelid, but nothing else. Her eyes ran to his neck and she remembered seeing the beginnings of scars on his chest at dinner last week. Where did those scars extend to?

Lyra swallowed thickly, feeling hot tears prick her eyes. Hearing about the attack and seeing its effects were two different things. Garrick said that he didn’t remember the actual attack very much. Lyra thought that was a blessing. It must’ve been horrific.

Lightly, she ran her fingertip over the edge of one scar. It was smooth and felt cool to the touch. Feeling bold, she leaned over and brushed her lips over his cheek, his temple, his forehead, and then reached between them for his mask.

She was glad that she’d finally seen his face. Yes, she could understand why people stared, why they whispered about him, but he was no less beautiful to her now than he’d been earlier that evening. If anything, he was more beautiful for all of his flaws. She also knew, however, that he wouldn’t have wanted her to see him like this. Not yet anyway. Not until he was ready to show her.

Which was why she slipped his mask back on, gently securing the strap around the back of his head, praying that he was a heavy sleeper and that he wouldn’t wake up.

Her prayers were answered. Other than him shifting his leg under the sheet, he didn’t move.

Her eyelids began to flutter and Lyra scooted closer to him, laying her cheek on his chest, watching it rise and fall with his breaths, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart. That was when she knew she was beginning to fall in love with this man.

Lyra closed her eyes and couldn’t help but smile.
